English Literature, Language and Linguistics (BA)

Southampton is an exciting, multicultural city with a rich history. This course is for international students who would like to improve their spoken and written English. You'll study modern and classic literature, including Shakespeare. You can also learn more about the linguistics behind it.

Linguistics is the science of language - its structure, grammar and sounds.

This course focuses on learning the English language, but you'll also take modules in:

linguistics
culture
literature
You'll learn how language develops and study literature and culture from other countries that speak English.

Our flexible English literature language and linguistics course will let you take modules from English but also other subjects.

As part of this course you can:

use our Centre for Language Study, including the English resources room
study topics like poetic language, globalisation or Victorian emotions
develop your communication and research skills
join one of 40 performing arts groups
take part in writing workshops at Nuffield Southampton Theatres
experiment with writing at our Entropics events
