Quantitative and Translational Skills in Global Health MRes

With an emphasis in advanced quantitative methods, the MRes in Global Health: translational research and quantitative skills is designed to develop your multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills relevant to translational research for global health.

This MRes prepares you as a bridge scientist, able to work in multi-disciplinary teams to translate scientific innovations into beneficial health programmes in vulnerable communities world-wide. The programme will give you high-level introductions to key considerations in translational research for global health and to the various contributing methodologies. You will receive core training in quantitative, qualitative, and translational methods, with options available in subjects such as geospatial data technology and geostatistics, infectious disease models, health economics and bioinformatics.

Who is it for?

This course is for students with scientific backgrounds who are interested in furthering their skills around health questions globally. In particular, this course suits graduates with quantitative, life sciences, or clinical degrees.
Applicants are expected to have a first degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent experience as agreed by the course director), or be an undergraduate clinical student wishing to undertake an intercalated Master’s degree.

Where?

The MRes is based at Lancaster University, though project work is supervised in conjunction with Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and other international partner institutions.

Delivery

The course requires one year of full-time study, divided into 60 credits of taught material and 120 credits of project work.
Four “core” modules will give you a broad introduction to quantitative and qualitative methods with a focus on global health. A choice of 3 “option” modules will then allow you to further your skills in areas such as advanced statistics, geostatistical and infectious disease models, health economics, and bioinformatics.
In addition, you will work on three individual projects of 40 credits each, on topics related to Global Health in the UK and overseas. UK projects are supervised at Lancaster University and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Overseas projects will be undertaken with our international partner institutions such as MLW in Malawi, Noguchi in Ghana, and Fio Cruz in Brazil.

Career prospects

On graduation, our students will possess highly sought-after skills in international health policy advice, government/non-government public health research, and health data science
