Graduate Certificate in Asian Studies

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge crucial to understanding and engaging with the region, and offers the options of focusing on business and management, politics and contemporary sociocultural debates. You’ll gain awareness of the historical, cultural and political landscapes that shape and inform contemporary Asia. Further, you will acquire the skills to apply this understanding in your professional and personal engagements with the region.

Build your language skills by studying Chinese, Indonesia, Japanese or Korean for professionals. In addition, you'll study topics including the environment, inequality, corruption, development, education, religion and human rights. You'll examine state cultural policies, state media, social media and mass and 'high' cultures to develop a critical understanding of the underlying ideologies and values within Asian societies. You'll also learn about tensions between the ways in which notions of 'tradition' and 'modernity' intersect, and be able to apply Western critical theories to Asian contexts.
