Film & Visual Culture, MA
Our unique Film & Visual Culture programme at Aberdeen offers a rigorous training in the history and theory of the moving image, as well as the shifting terrain of 21st century visual culture.
You will combine the analysis of visual objects and artefacts– analogue and digital, moving and still, underground and mainstream – with theory to explore a range of underground and mainstream cinematic movements. You will also look at the practical elements of film and visual culture, including the production and circulation of film.
This broad, rigorous and enquiring approach is a great preparation for further study or for a career in the film industry, broadcasting, new media, journalism, teaching and other related fields. New opportunities in Scottish broadcasting are available through our Joint degree in Film and Visual Culture and Gaelic Studies.

The Old Aberdeen campus is the historic heart of the University and combines immaculately preserved buildings with state-of-the-art facilities for learning, research and recreation. The Schools incorporating the Arts and Social Sciences and Physical Sciences are based here.

Arts: At Standard XII a minimum percentage of 75% overall. Additionally, a minimum percentage of 80% in English at Standard XII or our normal English language requirements. The University of Aberdeen will also accept successful completion of the first year of a University degree programme as qualifying for first-year entry.
Science: At Standard XII a minimum percentage of 75% overall, including 75% or more in two science subjects, or Mathematics and a science subject. A minimum grade of 75% is required where the prospectus specifies good performance in a particular subject. Additionally, a minimum percentage of 80% in English at Standard XII or our normal English language requirements
