BA (HONS) PAINTING AND DRAWING

We recognise that many Art students want to specialise from the outset of their degree, focusing the development of skills in one clear discipline area.

This programme is built around the key areas of drawing and painting and will encourage you to experiment with other 2D media (i.e. printmaking). It is supported by technical workshop provision to enable you to achieve the highest quality art production. This route allows you to commit to this discipline area and explore traditional/observational and experimental work and the building of your own supports.

The painting and drawing programme makes use of excellent specialist facilities that support a wide range of practice. There are specialist workshops introducing you to oil, acrylic and other paint media. We give demonstrations in techniques and processes. Painting & drawing encompasses a variety of skills and techniques enabling you to develop professional approaches to a range of making processes.

We will encourage you to develop an intellectual curiosity, and a sense of adventure, with an ability to deal with the unpredictable.

In the first year, you will initially be set a series of research and drawing based activities that will drive your ideas towards a self-directed practice, greater independence, and by the final year, the attainment of a distinctive vision.

Lectures and seminars along with the peer group critique in the studio, support independent, self-directed work. You will learn to create your own negotiated pattern of work as you move towards an exhibition for your degree show in your final year.

We offer you the opportunity to exhibit your work across campus. A series of selected work is hung in the general public spaces and provides a professional showcase for your work.

Main Studio and Workshop Skills and Activities:

Painting: Oil, acrylic, construction, mixed media, collage.
Printmaking: Etching, screen-printing, relief printing, mono-print and combined media, block print and photo based processes
Drawing: Drawing is seen as an important element in the development and realization of ideas and is the basis of the initial studio work at level one

Campus Information

Bognor Regis Campus

Situated just five minutes from the sea, our Bognor Regis Campus boasts the £35m Tech Park which was opened by their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. It is our flagship building which is home to our Engineering and Design and Creative Digital Technologies Departments. In addition to this, we have beautiful Georgian architecture including three grand mansion houses amongst our other modern teaching facilities. Bognor Regis is well known for its long stretch of coastline, with a mixture of sandy and pebble beaches and with just a five minute walk from campus, there no excuse not to visit. The Bognor Regis campus is also close to Hotham Park, a beautiful 22 acre public park. The park surrounds Hotham House, built in 1792 by Sir Richard Hotham, and regarded by many as one of the finest Georgian houses in Sussex. The famous Butlins Bognor Regis resort lies at the eastern end of the promenade and is the largest holiday centre in the South of England.
