The New Zealand Certificates in English comprise of eight English language programmes from foundation through to advanced level.
These programmes give you the language skills and knowledge useful for living and working in New Zealand.
The Foundation Level 1 programme enables learners to communicate with support in very basic, familiar and everyday situations.
This programme is available full time and consists of 18 weeks (6 months) of intensive learning. It is also available part-time over 36 weeks (12 months).

Christchurch City
The Madras street campus is on the fringe of Christchurch’s CBD and within easy walking distance of shops, cafes, supermarkets, entertainment venues, parks and other attractions. It’s well serviced by public transport, and is just five minutes from the city’s main bus exchange. The Madras street campus is Ara’s largest. In addition to modern, purpose designed facilities, it also has a recreation centre, gym, health centre, a bookshop and a number of on-site cafes.
Ashburton
The Ashburton campus is located west of the town centre, within walking distance from the town's shopping area, supermarkets, department stores and recreational facilities. Ashburton is a thriving rural town about one hour's drive south of Christchurch and is a great place for recreational pursuits, with ski fields, lakes and reserves within easy reach. A

PSW Opportunity
- During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
- After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
- After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.

This programme has open entry.
There is no specific English language entry requirement as English level will be assessed through placement testing.
Applicants who present current and valid evidence of previous English language study will have this taken into account in placement decisions
