Doctor of Education (EdD)

The Doctor of Education (EdD) is a forward-thinking, rigorous postgraduate research training program for professional educators engaged in contexts from across the education and social welfare sectors – including school teachers, college lecturers, medical educators, social workers, and Higher Education staff.

The EdD aims to equip students with a range of core and generic skills in research that has practical application in their place of work. The aim of the EdD at the university has always been to produce a ‘researching professional’ able to make a real contribution to innovative professional practice in their professional context.

Campus Information

King Alfred Quarter

Student life is centred on our King Alfred Quarter, within walking distance of the historic cathedral city of Winchester. In recent years, the King Alfred Quarter has been added to and renovated to enhance its facilities with the latest industry-standard equipment, digital networks and AV technology. The award-winning King Alfred Centre is a bright and spacious social hub. It houses the Student Union, bookshop, Learning Cafe, Food Hall, Terrace Bar, Gourmet Burger Company, Student Union Shop and The Vault – the main venue for student social activities. The St Alphege building offers state-of-the-art learning and teaching facilities, including 10 lecture rooms and a mezzanine floor with open-access PCs.

West Downs Quarter

The West Downs Quarter is a short walk from the centre of the King Alfred Quarter. It is the home of the West Downs Student Village and the University of Winchester Business School. The University of Winchester Business School its own cafe (Cafe Life) and number social learning spaces with the latest IT equipment for you to use for individual and group work sessions. Other key features of the West Downs Quarter include the West Downs Gallery, which is open to the public and runs an art exhibition programme throughout the year featuring established and emerging artists from the world of visual arts. It is also home to the Research and Knowledge Exchange Centre, which is dedicated to research, enterprise and consultancy. It provides excellent resources for postgraduate students, particularly research students as it is the centre of research administration and support services.

Admission Requirements

  • Normally a Masters degree in Education or a related discipline and relevant professional experience. Exceptionally, students might be admitted without the normal entry requirements, once they have demonstrated their ability at Level 7.

India

  • Successful completion of a four-year undergraduate degree with 60%-70%, from a recognized Indian institution. Degrees from the main metropolitan universities, for example, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai (Madras) Mumbai (Bombay), Ahmadabad, Pune, Bangalore, Nagpur, Kanpur, Kolkata (Calcutta), Lucknow, Jaipur, Jodhpur. A well-recognized college affiliated with a large metropolitan university will normally be considered for entry with 60% (and above). Due to the very stringent marking schemes at the University of Calcutta and the University of Pune (First Class degrees are normally given marks between 58%-62%), we might accept students with lower marks.
  • Students holding a three-year undergraduate degree may be accepted into some subject areas with grades of 60%-70% overall depending on the subject. However, this is subject to decision by the relevant admissions tutor.
