Bachelor of Science in Interior Design

Our program teaches students to identify, research and creatively solve problems in the design of functional and high-quality interior environments. You will learn approaches to design, interior construction, sustainable practices, interior materials and building codes.

While in the program, you will engage in programming, design analysis and space planning in interior environments. Our students prepare computer-aided and hand-rendered drawings and documents that detail their specifications for aesthetically pleasing interiors that meet client needs, enhance quality of life and protect the health, safety and welfare of the public.

Entry into the program is competitive. Students are evaluated at the end of their first year and a cohort of the top 20 are selected based on their performance in the Interior Design courses, projects and overall grade point average.

Interior Design majors are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of clubs and extracurricular activities across the campus, such as the Solar House Decathlon and the WVU Chapter of the The American Society of Interior Designers.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates work in many design fields. Some become commercial designers, creating retail spaces, corporate offices, educational facilities or healthcare buildings. They may also become product designers, facility managers or project managers. Others pursue residential interiors; they may start their own residential design businesses, become textile designers, create kitchens and baths or represent furniture manufacturers. Interior designers may also specialize in lighting systems, historic preservation or sustainable design.

Our graduates have been hired by large international commercial design firms such as SmithGroupJJR, real estate development firms such as David S. Brown Enterprises Ltd. and the Disney Corporation. More locally, recent graduates have found jobs with architectural firms such as Omni Associates, commercial office companies such as Omega Commercial Interiors and kitchen and bath specialty companies such as Davis Kitchen and Tile.
