8-Week Narrative VR Workshop

Designed for students who want a hands-on introduction to all aspects of narrative-driven virtual reality production, our 8-Week Narrative VR Workshop will help you establish the conceptual foundation and storytelling techniques to design and direct VR content. Over the course of the eight weeks, students focus on developing stories that can only be told in VR.

The narrative VR curriculum draws on relevant concepts from early VR content, live theater, amusement parks, video games, and other interactive/immersive experiences, which students can apply to their original projects. In this workshop students are introduced to the current technological landscape and industry tools, with the goal of building the skills they’ll need to create their very own VR narratives. Throughout their time in the narrative VR workshop students will work with 360 camera rigs, lighting, spatialized sound, multiple post-production platforms, and directing actors and voice-over talent. The end goal of the program is for students to create, for a final project, an original piece of VR content, which they can execute using any of the tools at their disposal.

Students have the opportunity to work with:

  • Nikon Key Mission 360 camera
  • Unity 3D game engine
  • Samsung Gear 360 camera
  • HTC Vive headset and hand-held controllers
  • Mettle Skybox Suite plug-in for Adobe Premiere and After Effects
  • Kodak Orbit 360 camera
  • Sennheiser Ambeo VR 3D microphone
  • Google Daydream View + Pixel

To support the core narrative VR curriculum, students gather industry insights from demos by VR tech innovators, as well as guest lectures by content producers across retail, documentary, music, games, filmmaking, and beyond.

No prior experience is required to enroll in the 8-Week Narrative VR Workshop. Projects, equipment, and curriculum are subject to change.
