Students in this programme will be introduced to four English language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking, and begin to use and understand simple English for everyday situations. Students will also be introduced to online learning.

Job Opportunity Potential

The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Foundation) (Level 1) offers the necessary language proficiency for entry into further English language programmes, usually NZCEL (Level 1).

If you complete 1 or more acceptable qualifications at Levels 4 to 6:

  • on or before 31 December 2021, you can apply for a visa to work in New Zealand for 2 years. 
  • after 31 December 2021, you can apply for a visa to work in New Zealand for 1 year.

If you complete a Graduate Diploma or another Level 7 qualification:

  • on or before 31 December 2021, you can apply for a Post-study work visa for 2 years
  • after 31 December 2021, you can apply for a Post-study work visa for 1 year.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

General academic admission

a) To be eligible for this programme, candidates must be 16 years or older, and must take part in a selection interview and will be required to take a Placement Test to determine their current English language level and learning goals.

c) Candidates must demonstrate a reasonable chance of success in the programme.

English language requirements

Candidates for this programme will have no command or very minimal command of English. Placement in this programme will be determined by the Centre for Languages Placement Test.
