Master of Education in Special Education

Teachers with a passion for supporting students in the special education classroom can pursue a Masters of Education at VIU to dive deeper into teaching and learning strategies that address unique learning challenges.

This Master of Education in Special Education (MSED) is offered as a part-time online Master program or full-time in-person cohort, making it flexible and accessible for practicing teachers to undertake their Master's of Education while working. The VIU Special Education Master’s program is designed as a highly experiential learning environment. Graduate students are able to personalize their learning and build meaningful connections with the school communities they live and work in.

(Main campus)Located on the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, VIU’s main campus in Nanaimo hosts an ocean-view campus, spanning 92 scenic acres, including lush stands of forest and Japanese gardens. Walk nature trails located a few minutes from campus on foot, or take a quick city transit ride to Nanaimo’s harbourside downtown centre for eclectic dining, pubs, coffee shops, and shopping.

Job Opportunity Potential


Domestic graduates of this program will be well-poised to assume Special Education positions at the school and district level. School districts in British Columbia report great difficulty in recruiting qualified Special Education teachers.

   We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.
For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.

> If your program was 2 years or more
   We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

> If you completed more than 1 program
   You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed -
must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of "B" in the final two years.
  • A record of at least two years of successful teaching is preferred.
  • Two current, confidential assessment reports.
  • A letter of intent explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue graduate work in this area. 

Notes on Admission

  • Enrolment in this program is limited. Students who meet or exceed the minimum admission requirements may not necessarily be admitted to the program. Applicants will be required to submit a resume outlining teaching experience.
  • Applicants may apply to the Dean for possible transfer credits from other accredited Master's degree programs.
  • Students who have completed the former Special Education Teaching Specialty Post Degree Diploma Program (SETS) should contact a Faculty of Education graduate programs advisor to determine their eligibility for the Master of Education in Special Education (laddering option).
