BA English Literature (Flexible)

Our BA English Literature Programmes are ranked 12th in the Guardian University Guide 2020 and are taught to small groups by energetic and enthusiastic academics with international research profiles in 19th- and 20th-century studies.

Ideas developed in core seminars are taken forward in weekly small-group tutorials, where a maximum of eight students discuss and interpret specific passages of writing, under the watchful guidance of their tutor.

Students will read widely and develop strong lines of argument and personal responses to what they find, anchored in an informed understanding of the discipline and with reference to the critical debates that animate it. We believe, as Jeanette Winterson says, that “learning how to read deeply” – and that means diverse and sometimes difficult texts – “trains the brain and improves your sense of self. Learning how to write, even reasonably well, gives fluency to the rest of life”.

BA English Literature Single or Flexible Honours options
Make your degree as unique as you! If you choose BA English Literature (Single or Flexible Honours) you’ll have the freedom to tailor your English Literature degree to reflect your interests and passions by combining it with a wide range of other subjects taught here at the University. This means that when you graduate you will have a highly personalised degree that will suit you and your aspirations perfectly.

If you choose Flexible Honours you have the freedom to select up to a third of your modules from the whole range of what is taught at the University. This means you can mix and match lots of different subjects ?with English Literature or focus solely on English Literature. At every stage, your Personal Tutor will be on hand to advise and guide your choices.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Foundation entry requirements
In order to study at foundation level you will need to have undertaken 12 years of education and attained:

Higher Secondary Certificate / Standard 12 (awarded on completion of Grade 12) with four subjects at 50%.

As proof of English language proficiency you would need one of the following:

For September start an IELTS score of 5.5, with 5.0 or above in each section
For January start an IELTS score of 6.0, with 5.5 or above in each section

The grades quoted above give an indication of a typical offer; at the Admissions Tutor’s discretion alternative qualifications or gradings may be considered. All applications will be considered individually and work experience and other interdisciplinary achievements are taken into consideration when deciding upon all applications. Applicants may also be invited to interview.

Undergraduate entry requirements
In order to study at undergraduate level (Bachelor’s degree), you will normally need to have attained one of the following:

Three A-levels at grade B or higher
IB score of between 29 and 34 (depending on the degree subject)
2 scores above 65% and 2 scores above 75%

*Applicants for undergraduate Law programmes are normally expected to have achieved additional qualifications, such as a first degree.
