Master of Information Technology in Networking
Networked IT systems are vital to society and underlie most of our economy. They are the backbone of the seamless online shopping and internet search functions we take for granted, and are fundamental to the telecommunications industry.
In this degree, you’ll develop an in-depth integrated knowledge of advanced concepts in network and internetwork technologies, and learn how to apply them to solving practical problems in networked IT systems, as well as related topics such as network design and security. If you have undergraduate qualifications in IT, computing or engineering (with suitable units in computer programming), this degree will enable you to transition into the internetworking field.
KEY FEATURES
- You’ll research and synthesise alternate solutions, concepts and procedures, and apply expert judgement to networking technologies from organisational and innovation perspectives.
- You’ll learn how to synthesise technical knowledge with management and policy aspects of internetworked systems and communicate these ideas to wider management and IT professionals.
- You’ll model and simulate different types of networks to determine operational requirements; identify weaknesses and areas of improvement and design; and configure, validate, implement and trouble-shoot complex internetworked systems.
- Your learning will be enhanced by our location in Australia’s largest high-tech precinct, which is brimming with collaborative, internship and employment opportunities.
- You’ll have the opportunity to undertake an industry internship during your studies.
- You’ll have access to modern, innovative technology in our Simulation Hub, and to state-of-the-art teaching spaces where you can collaborate with other students and use a multi-screen, shared visual experience to enhance your learning experience.

Job Opportunity Potential
Studying hard and getting great marks doesn’t guarantee you a job. Most employers expect applicants to be skilled and experienced in the workplace. Working while you study is an excellent way to build your employability skills and gain life experience.
Why does it?
Employers appreciate any full-time, casual or part-time experience like working in hospitality or retail, on a reception desk, or even in construction. They value this kind of experience because it shows that you can be responsible and professional. Working while you study builds professional skills that are essential for professional roles:
- Time management
- Teamwork
- Customer service
- Attention to detail
- Working independently
- Showing initiative
- Communication (verbal and written)
Working on and off-campus
CareerHub is Macquarie’s jobs portal, connecting you with external organizations that offer part-time, casual, full-time employment opportunities as well as internships, cadetships, and volunteer experience.
Finding an on-campus job is often ideal as it centralizes both study and work, but opportunities on-campus are limited. Opportunities can be found here:
