Master of Economic Analysis

In this course, you will analyse theoretical and real-world economic issues using state-of-the-art economic modelling and statistical analysis. The degree includes core, electives and a 1-year research dissertation completed under the personal supervision of an academic member of staff.

Who is it for?

This degree is designed for students with a strong background in mathematics, the sciences, or a strong undergraduate major in economics, as well as for professionals requiring high-end training in economic theory and applications. It is also suitable for students seeking a pathway towards a PhD.

Course opportunities
Business internship for high-achieving students
High-achieving students have the option to undertake an assessable work placement in Australia or overseas, worth six credit points. Places in these units will be offered on a competitive basis and are subject to availability.

Business dissertation for high-achieving students
Students who achieve a weighted average mark (WAM) of 80 percent or higher in at least eight units of study (48 credit points) may apply to complete a 24 credit point research module comprising a supervised research dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words. Access to the business dissertation units is subject to an interview and the availability of suitable supervisors.

Career pathways
Sydney Master of Commerce graduates will acquire the skills and knowledge to pursue high-level positions in industry or government, in areas relevant to their specialisations. For example, the degree can prepare you for positions in accounting, marketing or other specialist fields. It also gives you a thorough understanding of commerce for use in many business fields.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Entry in the 1 year or 1.5 year degree program is determined by the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) criteria below:

Admission to candidature for the Master of Economic Analysis (1.5 years full-time) requires:

  • a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney, including a major in Economics with a minimum distinction (75%) average, or an equivalent qualification; or
  • completion of the requirements of the embedded Graduate Certificate in Economic Analysis or Graduate Diploma in Economic Analysis with a minimum distinction (75%), or an equivalent qualification; or
  • completion of the Graduate Certificate in Economics with a minimum high distinction (85%) average, or equivalent qualification.

Admission to candidature for the Master of Economic Analysis (1 year full-time) requires:

  • completion of the requirements for the embedded Graduate Diploma in Economic Analysis or an equivalent qualification; or
  • an Honours degree in a relevant discipline.

If you do not meet the requirements listed above for direct entry to the Master’s degree, you may be able to enter via a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in the same subject area and upgrade to the Master’s after successful completion of the shorter course with the relevant minimum average mark.

English Language Requirements:

  • IELTS score A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.5 in each band
  • TOEFL - IBT score A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 20 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 22 in Writing
  • Pearsons Test of English A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 61 in each band
