Master of Biopharmaceutical Engineering
Deliver life-saving medicines to the world
Biopharmaceuticals have a critical role to play in improving global health. The more effectively and efficiently these powerful medicines can be designed and produced, the more lives they can improve and save.
Professionals with specialist biopharmaceutical engineering training are in demand worldwide. Our new Master of Biopharmaceutical Engineering will prepare you to take up the challenge.
What will you do?
Suitable for high-achieving engineering and science graduates, as well as engineers with relevant work experience, the degree offers three specialist pathways to choose from: Research, Industry or Professional Systems.
The first year is common to all. Through an engaging blend of face-to-face and online coursework, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of biopharmaceutical manufacturing’s technical, management and process engineering aspects.
In year two, depending on your chosen pathway, you’ll undertake a significant research, industry- or business-based project. In all cases, you’ll receive ongoing supervision and mentorship from one of our world-class research-active academics and/or a recognised industry expert. You’ll emerge with:
comprehensive awareness of global biopharmaceutical market demands and regulatory requirements
advanced knowledge and capability in state-of-the-art biopharmaceutical engineering, manufacturing and processing practice, including advanced processing technologies, applied data management and the use of artificial intelligence systems
the ability to critically reflect on appropriate use of biopharmaceutical principles and techniques, and advise others accordingly
deep understanding of the industry’s social and environmental impacts
high-level problem-solving and communication skills.
Where could it take you?
You’ll graduate ready to play a leading role in cutting-edge biopharmaceutical engineering anywhere in the world. You could help design and/or deliver next-level manufacturing and processing of therapies based on monoclonal antibodies, recombinant human insulin or interferons. Your work could reduce the toll of cancer, cardiovascular disease or diabetes. You may even choose to take your knowledge further still with a PhD.

Job Opportunity Potential
There are three key steps you will need to take when addressing the selection criteria in any University of Adelaide job application:
- Create a new document. Your statement addressing the position’s specified selection criteria should be separate from your cover letter and resume.
- List each criterion separately. Give each a title, using exactly the same wording as appears on the Position Description (e.g. Excellent verbal communication skills).
- Address each criterion. Under each heading, write two short paragraphs explaining how your experience, skills, education and training equip you to meet that specific requirement. Dot points are also acceptable.
Please note that failing to submit a statement addressing the selection criteria could result in your application not being considered.
Some helpful writing tips
There are a number of steps you can take when putting together your responses to increase their clarity and impact.
- Give details of one or two specific things you’ve done that are good examples of the relevant experience or knowledge required. For example: ‘I was responsible for organising an event attended by… This involved…'
- Preface these examples with a short overview that shows you appreciate the relevance of the specific criterion.
- Quantify your experience (number of years worked, staff supervised, etc.). For example: ‘I delivered a presentation to an industry forum with an audience of 80 people.’
- Where possible, indicate how successfully you meet the criterion. You could do this by referring to feedback from others, or things you've set up that are still being used. For example: ‘A report I wrote about… was endorsed by the… Committee and circulated to all stakeholders for discussion.
You could also consider using the STAR method as a structural framework when describing examples of your work. This involves describing, in the order listed here, the:
- situation you faced
- task required, and desired outcome
- action you took to complete the task
- results you achieved, and lessons you learned.
