MPhil, PhD Economics

We encourage applications for PhD study from suitably qualified candidates with research interests that align closely with at least one of our faculty members.

The research focus of the economics department is on policy-relevant applied economics research, and we have specialists in applied microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics.

The department is home to the Fraser of Allander Institute, a leading independent economic research institute focused on the Scottish economy. This can provide a key medium through which to engage with policy-makers and sell the relevance of your research.

We have a lively PhD programme in economics with a regular inflow of new students each year.

You'll benefit from a team of two supervisors with specialist knowledge in your field, and you'll have a dedicated desk and PC with software appropriate to your needs in our economics PhD space.

You'll join our economics research community, engage with our regular seminar series of external speakers, with our brown bag workshop series to explore early research ideas, and with our annual PGR Away Day where you will present your research.

Normal entry to a research degree is for PhD study, but you can also study for an MPhil and a DBA.

Graduate employers not only ask for a degree qualification, they expect job applicants to bring a range of skills that they have gained outside of their studies, e.g. through work experience, volunteering, part-time jobs. Strathclyde University Careers Service will be happy to help you to prepare for your future graduate career once you become a member of Strathclyde University.

At some stage we all make choices about the career path we will follow. We can help you with this process if:

  • You are unsure where to start,
  • You have no idea of the career that would suit you,
  • You have some vague ideas but need support to think them through,
  • You need help finding more information

It is never too early to start thinking about your future career. We're happy to work with you from first year, throughout your degree and beyond graduation - at whatever stage you’ve reached in your thinking.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

For entry to Strathclyde postgraduate programmes, we'd look for a first-class undergraduate degree (approx 60%) from a recognised Indian institution.

Although 60% is a general entry requirement we understand that the marking system in some of the states and national universities make it harder to achieve 60%, therefore we will accept 55% from University of Mumbai, University of Calcutta, University of Delhi etc.

Graduates from the IITs and IIMs will also be considered with marks in the region of 55%. If you wish to apply for a research degree you'd normally have to have a Masters degree and some experience of research work.

IELTS requirement is 6.5
