Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours)
The Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) course provides extended modern and rigorous training in mathematical sciences and related research, to prepare students both for higher-level graduate careers in industry and government and for research at the PhD level or a Master of Philosophy. The course contributes to addressing the continuing shortage of highly trained mathematical scientists in Australia and abroad.
Through a combination of research and advanced coursework units, students pursue specialized studies in an area of mutual interest with a personal research mentor/supervisor. Research units will enable students to develop an understanding of the nature of mathematical and statistical approaches to solving real-world, current research problems. Coursework units provide students the opportunity to develop much more advanced skills and knowledge compared with those built in the undergraduate course. The coursework emphasizes mathematics and statistics that are required for current research and for a competitive edge in the employment market.
The course provides students with a further depth of knowledge and analytical skills expected of professionals who apply mathematics, computational methods, decision science, and statistics in the workplace and in further research.
