Master of Philosophy (Medicine and Health)
Research at the University of Sydney Medical School embraces health and medical research from fundamental molecular mechanisms through to clinical research and trials; from public health issues to health policy development.
Sydney Medical School is dedicated to improving health through excellence in research, creating new knowledge and fostering innovation. Our research is focused on both discovery and translating new discoveries into improved healthcare.
This course is aimed at those who intend to pursue a career in medical or health research or who wish to gain a competitive edge by demonstrating superior ability and research experience. It may also be used as a stepping-stone to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
With over 1600 active researchers at the Sydney Medical School, prospective students can choose from a huge number of research projects that are close to their interests and career ambitions and have at their disposal the full range of enabling disciplines across Sydney Medical School. Research degrees are available for both medical and non-medical graduates.
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is aimed at those who intend to pursue careers in medical or health research or who wish to gain a competitive edge by demonstrating superior ability and research experience. The MPhil is a research degree in which students undertake supervised research leading to the production of a thesis.
The faculty may admit an applicant that has obtained at least a credit in the highest course available in the subject or subjects relevant to the proposed course of advanced study and research. Full-time MPhil students have a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 2 years to submit a thesis for examination. Part-time students have a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 4 years to submit.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply in plenty of time, and even before completion of their current qualifying degree. In these circumstances, referee reports are essential as part of the application for admission. To apply for a Master of Philosophy, you need to demonstrate sufficient prior research experience and capability. In most cases, to be eligible to apply for a Master of Philosophy you will have:
- a bachelors degree with first or upper second class Honours or
- a masters degree performed at a high academic standard, and which includes a substantial component of original research, or
- an equivalent qualification that demonstrates research experience, excellence and capability.
These criteria constitute the minimum requirements for eligibility and do not guarantee admission. That remains at the discretion of the Associate Dean (HDR) for a given Faculty.
TOEFL - IBT score - A minimum result of 85 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
IELTS score - A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band
TOEFL - PBT score - A minimum result of 565 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing
Pearsons Test of English - A minimum result of 61 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
