Master of Laws (Research)

The Master of Laws by thesis equips candidates for careers in advanced research, policy development, public service, tertiary teaching or professional leadership. It will enable you to acquire and develop sophisticated research and analysis skills, honed through work on a topic of your choice that expands legal thinking and understanding.

The LLM is up to two years full-time and four years part-time and is awarded on the basis of a supervised thesis of 50,000 words. The thesis must make a substantial contribution to the knowledge of the subject concerned. Candidates are also required to undertake the compulsory research-support unit, LAWS6077 Legal Research 1.

Research areas
Master of Laws candidates may undertake research in one of the following research themes: Asian and Islamic law; Children, youth and families; Citizenship, migration and refugees; Commercial and international commercial law; Constitutional and administrative law; Corporate, securities and finance law; Criminal law, justice and criminology; Environmental law and climate change; Health law, governance and ethics; Human rights and development; Intellectual property, media and privacy law; International law; Justice, legal process and the profession; Jurisprudence and legal theory; Labour, employment and anti-discrimination law; Legal history; Private law: tort, contracts, equity and property; and Taxation.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

A successful applicant for admission to candidature for the Master of Laws (LLM) requires an Honours degree with first or second class honours. Applications for admission to candidature for the Master of Laws (LLM) by thesis are assessed on the basis of: suitability and sufficiency of merit of the applicant's prior qualification (Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent); suitability of proposed topic; and availability of appropriate supervision.

TOEFL - IBT score - A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 23 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 25 in Writing

IELTS score - A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 7.0 in each band

TOEFL - PBT score - A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing

Pearsons Test of English - A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
