Doctor of Dental Medicine

The Doctor of Dental Medicine will teach you to be a confident, ethical and qualified dentist. You will build skills through practice-based learning, in a four-year dentistry degree developed to meet the changing oral health needs of the community.
The Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) is a graduate-entry course that will allow you to have a rewarding career as a dentist, eligible for registration with the Dental Board of Australia.

The Surry Hills Campus houses the main offices of the Sydney Dental School, the Dentistry Library, teaching, seminar and recreational facilities and the extensive clinical facilities of the Sydney Dental Hospital.

Career opportunities
Graduates of the Doctor of Dental Medicine are eligible for immediate registration with the Dental Board of Australia, allowing you to go straight in to practice. Canadian students can undertake the examination of the National Examining Board of Canada, allowing registration and practice in their home country.

You can then work in:

  • Private practice dentistry
  • Public service dentistry (eg. in hospitals or schools)
  • Defence forces.

You could also then undertake further study at the Sydney Dental School, and specialise in:

  • Conscious sedation and pain control
  • Oral implants
  • Oral medicine and oral pathology
  • Orthodontics
  • Paediatric dentistry
  • Periodontics
  • Prosthodontics
  • Special care dentistry.
  • Outstanding graduates may pursue a higher degree by research in the courses of Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission to the DMD in 2024, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Satisfactory performance* in an eligible bachelor’s degree at the time of application, as indicated by Grade Point Average (GPA); and
  • Satisfactory performance* in an admissions test – Domestic applicants must submit eligible Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) results with their application. International applicants must submit eligible GAMSAT, United States Dental Admission Test (DAT), or Canadian Dental Aptitude Test (CDAT) results with their application. 

Eligible GAMSAT results: Despite any contrary advice from ACER or GAMSAT, the University will ONLY accept GAMSAT results from one or more of the following tests for admission to the DMD in 2024: September 2021, March 2022, September 2022 and March 2023.      

The University reserves the right to ask some applicants to participate in further assessment using another selection tool. The University will give these applicants due notice of any additional requirements. 

Eligibility

You will be ineligible to apply if:

  • You have not completed or will not complete an eligible bachelor’s degree by 1 January of the year in which you intend to enrol in the DMD. (Please note the exception for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants under the Indigenous Facilitated Entry Scheme – see below.)
  • You have previously applied unsuccessfully for admission to the DMD at the University of Sydney and have commenced studies in postgraduate dentistry at another University.

You will be ineligible for admission to the DMD for a period of two years from the date of application or enrolment, as relevant if you have previously accepted an offer of a place in the DMD at the University of Sydney, and have:

  • failed to submit any outstanding documentation to proceed with an unconditional offer or to enrol; or
  • enrolled in and subsequently withdrawn from or discontinued the DMD without prior approval from the relevant delegated officer;
