BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science

Paramedics are autonomous practitioners, who are often the first point of contact for a patient requiring emergency or urgent healthcare. They work in a variety of settings and deliver patient care in situations that can be complex and highly pressured. This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to manage patients with illness or injury, including assessment and diagnostic skills through to treatment or referral to other healthcare professionals.

The course has strong emphasis on high-quality care, taking into account rapid changes within the profession. A sound understanding of evidence-based practice and research is a fundamental part of your education. Your studies will be interspersed with practice placements, facilitated by local ambulance services.

Throughout your BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science degree, practice placements will be interspersed giving you the all important valuable work experience you need on graduation.

Placements will give you the opportunity to link theoretical knowledge you gain via lectures and seminars with your practical experiences, providing you with a complete understanding and application of patient care practices.
This strongly enhances your employability skills.

Campus Information

College Lane Campus

The main site of the university remains the College Lane campus, which houses the original Hatfield Technical College building. Notable among the buildings in this campus is the university's Learning Resource Centre, a combined library and computer centre. There is also a substantial collection of halls of residence and student houses, and the University of Hertfordshire Students' Union is headquartered at College Lane campus. The College Lane campus is also the location of Hertfordshire International College, which is part of the Navitas group, providing a direct pathway for international students to the University.

  • BBC - B in a Natural Science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Applied Science or Physics)

BTEC

  • DMM - BTEC National Extended Diploma in Applied Science. Other Science BTECs will be considered (e.g. Sports and Exercise Science). (Does not include Health and Social Care.)

GCSE: Grade 4/C in English, Mathematics and Science.

Interview

As part of the application process, you will be required to have a face-to-face interview. This will help us decide about your suitability for becoming a student paramedic. If you are invited to interview, you need to be prepared to show us you have the potential to become a successful student. We will be assessing how you meet the Values of the NHS Constitution; your insight into the paramedic profession; and your commitment to becoming a paramedic student.

Undergraduate (year 1)

  • Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 60-70% depending on points tariff required by the UH course. Some courses may require specific subjects
  • IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band for standard courses – some courses require higher
  • Standard XII English with 65% will also be accepted

Undergraduate (year 2/3)

  • Depending on qualifications and course - usually require 2/3 year Diploma post-Standard XII to be considered
