BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering

Civil Engineers are responsible for reshaping the world around us, from the development of our towns and cities to the infrastructure that connects places and providing services to these places.

Our Civil apprentices may work for a major construction company or be employed by a consultancy firm or an organization such as a local authority or research establishment. Although many of these employers may specialize in one particular aspect of Civil Engineering, apprentices are expected to gain a broad understanding of the profession through the completion of an accredited degree.

The BEng in Civil Engineering at the University of Hertfordshire is one of the newest Civil Engineering degrees in the country and is unique in that it takes advantage of the partnership the University has with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) at Watford.

This program is mapped to the Civil Engineer apprenticeship standard.

Campus Information

College Lane Campus

The main site of the university remains the College Lane campus, which houses the original Hatfield Technical College building. Notable among the buildings in this campus is the university's Learning Resource Centre, a combined library and computer centre. There is also a substantial collection of halls of residence and student houses, and the University of Hertfordshire Students' Union is headquartered at College Lane campus. The College Lane campus is also the location of Hertfordshire International College, which is part of the Navitas group, providing a direct pathway for international students to the University.

Job Opportunity Potential

Employment prospects for civil engineers are strong, both in the UK and overseas. The UK government recently announced major infrastructure projects worth around £460bn, while global construction is expected to grow by some 75% by 2025. Graduates can go on to careers in multinational consultancies, as well as smaller design and project management companies, utility companies and the public sector.

UCAS Points

A Level

BCC - Requires Maths A level. Other A Levels may come from a selection of either Engineering or Technology, Science, Design, Computing, or Business related subjects. General studies/critical thinking not accepted.

BTEC

DMM - Requires Extended Diploma in Engineering (DMM) to include Distinction in Further Maths

GCSE: Grade 4/C in English, Mathematics, and Science.

Undergraduate (year 1)

Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 60-70% depending on points tariff required by the UH course. Some courses may require specific subjects
IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band for standard courses – some courses require higher
Standard XII English with 65% will also be accepted

Undergraduate (year 2/3)

Depending on qualifications and course - usually require 2/3 year Diploma post-Standard XII to be considered
