You'll have the opportunity to complete a laboratory-based final year project in our state of the art Science Building
You can choose to do a placement year in the industry, including Astra Zeneca, GSK, Eisai and Celgene

The massive research expenditure of Britain’s pharmaceutical companies and the fierce competition in the field ensures a continual demand for well-trained pharmacology graduates. This degree covers all aspects of drugs and their uses as medicines. You’ll learn how new drugs are discovered and tested and understand the reasons for their effectiveness in treating disease. You’ll also gain an appreciation of why new drugs are needed and how they can be developed. Our links with major pharmaceutical companies will provide cutting edge insight into the drug discovery process and give you the opportunity to gain valuable experience during your placement year. This degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.

Work placement - All Biosciences students have the opportunity to undertake a work placement or study overseas in Europe or North America during their 3rd year.

Study abroad

This course offers you the opportunity to study abroad in the Sandwich Year through the University's study abroad program. Study abroad opportunities are available worldwide and in Europe under the Erasmus+ Programme.

Campus Information

College Lane Campus

The main site of the university remains the College Lane campus, which houses the original Hatfield Technical College building. Notable among the buildings in this campus is the university's Learning Resource Centre, a combined library and computer centre. There is also a substantial collection of halls of residence and student houses, and the University of Hertfordshire Students' Union is headquartered at College Lane campus. The College Lane campus is also the location of Hertfordshire International College, which is part of the Navitas group, providing a direct pathway for international students to the University.

Our Biosciences graduates are highly sought after by employers in the industry due to the reputation of our teaching, the vocational element to our degrees, and the fact that many of our students already have a year's work experience when they graduate which they gain in the sandwich year. Graduates can find employment in the pharmaceutical, food and drink, agrochemical, and biotechnology industries as well as in industrial, academic, and charity-funded research. Some graduates also go on to work in health care and environment agencies. First salaries range from £12,000 to £22,000 pa.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

UCAS Points

A Level

  • BBC: Including 2 science GCE A-Levels (or equivalent) one of which must be a grade C in either biology or chemistry (acceptable A levels are Human Biology, Psychology, Geography, Maths, Physics, ICT, and Sports Studies).

BTEC

  • DMM -  Requires Extended Diploma in Engineering (DMM) to include Distinction in Further Maths

GCSE: Grade 4/C in English, 4/C in Mathematics and 4/C in Double Science or two Single Science grades at 4/C.

Undergraduate (year 1)

  • Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 60-70% depending on points tariff required by the UH course. Some courses may require specific subjects
  • IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band for standard courses – some courses require higher
  • Standard XII English with 65% will also be accepted

Undergraduate (year 2/3)

  • Depending on qualifications and course - usually require 2/3 year Diploma post-Standard XII to be considered
