BSc (Hons) Biological Science

Biology is the scientific study of living organisms and deals with every aspect of life. During the course, you’ll examine the physiology of the human body and how it’s affected by disease and drugs. You’ll study the structure, biochemistry, and mechanics of the cell, as well as evolutionary processes and genetics, both in mammals and microorganisms. As you progress, you’ll choose from a wide range of modules including blood sciences, pharmacology, microbiology, immunology, and drug discovery. You’ll also have the chance to study abroad or take a year’s work placement, either of which will boost your employability. Ultimately, you’ll gain the technical, analytical, and practical skills needed to investigate biological phenomena in microorganisms, plants, humans, and animals. This degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.

Work placement - All Biosciences students have the opportunity to undertake a work placement or study overseas in Europe or North America during their 3rd year.

Campus Information

College Lane Campus

The main site of the university remains the College Lane campus, which houses the original Hatfield Technical College building. Notable among the buildings in this campus is the university's Learning Resource Centre, a combined library and computer centre. There is also a substantial collection of halls of residence and student houses, and the University of Hertfordshire Students' Union is headquartered at College Lane campus. The College Lane campus is also the location of Hertfordshire International College, which is part of the Navitas group, providing a direct pathway for international students to the University.

Our Biosciences graduates are highly sought after by employers in the industry due to the reputation of our teaching, the vocational element to our degrees, and the fact that many of our students already have a year's work experience when they graduate which they gain in the sandwich year. Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

UCAS Points

A Level

  • BCC - Requires Maths A level. Other A Levels may come from a selection of either Engineering or Technology, Science, Design, Computing, or Business related subjects. General studies/critical thinking not accepted.

BTEC

  • DMM -  Requires Extended Diploma in Engineering (DMM) to include Distinction in Further Maths

GCSE: Grade 4/C in English, 4/C in Mathematics and 4/C in Double Science or two Single Science grades at 4/C.

Undergraduate (year 1)

  • Completion of the Standard XII Certificate with 60-70% depending on points tariff required by the UH course. Some courses may require specific subjects
  • IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band for standard courses – some courses require higher
  • Standard XII English with 65% will also be accepted

Undergraduate (year 2/3)

  • Depending on qualifications and course - usually require 2/3 year Diploma post-Standard XII to be considered
