Building Surveying BSc (Hons)

Want to help shape the buildings we live and work in? Get on-site and hands-on with this course accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Based in Chelmsford, you’ll learn a range of professional and technical skills, from converting and adapting buildings to performing surveys and valuations. You’ll be taught project management skills by experienced lecturers and practitioners in a multidisciplinary school alongside other construction professionals. Take an optional placement year and help build your future career

Building surveyors advise clients about the use and performance of their buildings, including brand-new builds as well as existing, historic or listed structures.

Our course will develop your skills in all aspects of surveying buildings. You’ll cover their design, specification, and performance. You’ll also learn about inspection and analysis, how to recognize and tackle defects, and how to manage projects.

You’ll learn to appreciate, identify and understand technical problems in construction and develop an understanding of the surveyor’s role within wider economic, legal, social, political and environmental frameworks.

Learning to work well independently and as part of a team, and in safe and ethical ways, you’ll mix with people from other built-environment professions and develop a clear sense of professional responsibility.

Job Opportunity Potential

We know that your future career prospects are important, and we're here to help you prepare for the world of work.

Whether you've just joined ARU or you're starting to think about graduation, the Employability Service can support you with career planning, job searches, interview preparation and more. We also organise a host of events, including careers fairs, workshops and opportunities to meet employers.

Skilled building surveying graduates are in demand, especially when they have experience of a variety of construction environments. When you graduate, you’ll have a wide choice of interesting careers, advising your clients on the potential and future use of their buildings.

A surveyor’s work is very varied; in the morning, you could be doing an inspection or supervising construction work on-site. In the afternoon, you could be writing reports in the office or advising clients on business tenancies.

We work with employers to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.

Our course offers a great platform from which to launch your career. It’s recognised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, so when you graduate you can do your Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) and qualify as a chartered surveyor.

Graduation doesn’t need to be the end of your time with us. If you’d like to continue your studies we offer a wide range of full-time and part-time postgraduate courses.
