Architectural Technology BSc (Hons)

It takes a team of people to turn architectural designs into reality. Become a vital part of that team through our Chelmsford-based Architectural Technology BSc (Hons) degree course, accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. At ARU you’ll study architecture as part of a multidisciplinary school and get to understand the role of other professionals in a construction team. Get hands-on in our model-making studios and explore building design styles on site visits and a European field trip - or by taking an optional placement year.

At ARU, our Architectural Technology degree course focuses on the link between building design and production. It gives you the technical understanding to bridge the two.

Architectural technology has four major themes: technology, design, management and practice. Studying our university degree course will give you the skills you need to practise successfully in each area, along with a thorough understanding of scientific, technological and organisational principles. Explore the principles of practice management, rationalized architectural design and how to lead projects from inception to completion in both residential to commercial areas. You will learn to play a pivotal role in the design and construction process.

Focusing on the relationships between materials, function, production and the environment, our course will help you to think about buildings in terms of ‘buildability’, sustainability and performance. By studying Architectural Technology at ARU, you'll learn to appreciate detailed design and production information, including regulatory issues, and how they relate to procurement and contract administration. You will also explore social, legal and economic considerations.

As well as this, you'll cover business and management, professional practice and contract administration. This will prepare you to contribute to the running of a successful practice.

Site visits and study trips will develop your understanding of the sector and connect you with industry. You will also learn to use practical and digital modelling and testing techniques to turn designs into reality. At our end-of-year Architecture and Planning Exhibition, you will have the chance to display your work to the public.

Our three-year degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, and is designated as a Construction Industries Board course in the built environment.

Job Opportunity Potential

We know that your future career prospects are important, and we're here to help you prepare for the world of work.

Whether you've just joined ARU or you're starting to think about graduation, the Employability Service can support you with career planning, job searches, interview preparation and more. We also organise a host of events, including careers fairs, workshops and opportunities to meet employers.

We work with employers to make sure you graduate with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need. They help us review what we teach and how we teach it – and they offer hands-on, practical opportunities to learn through work-based projects, internships or placements.

As an expert in the technical side of architectural design, you will be ready to work in a range of architectural and construction roles. This might involve managing building projects, making sure that budgets and deadlines are met, the correct materials are used, and regulations are satisfied.

Alternatively, you might take up opportunities in manufacturing and processing, management, health, or government institutions.

Graduation does not need to be the end of your time with us. If you would like to continue your studies, we offer a wide range of full-time and part-time postgraduate courses including MSc Construction Management  and MSc Town Planning.
