Music Therapy MPhil

Our research institute leads music therapy research for adults, older people, young people and children with a range of issues. We specialize in finding out what works clinically in music therapy and how it works, including which theoretical frameworks such as neurology, psychology, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis best inform the work.

Our innovative research involves outcome studies in a variety of settings, such as schools, health services, voluntary and the private sector, and we have many partnerships within these. Our research streams include music therapy and dementia, autism, end of life process, learning disability, mental health, children and families, addiction and stroke. Our Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research is based in a state-of-the-art music therapy center, including a research laboratory where practical music therapy and music and brain research can be undertaken in purpose-built spaces.

Over 10 music therapy PhDs have been completed through us during the last few years, and our cohorts are growing. As a Ph.D. student here you will be working alongside larger-scale international projects on music therapy, and there is a rich program of specialist lectures and Ph.D. subject-specific opportunities.

If you’re coming to study with us for undergraduate, postgraduate taught or postgraduate research course, you’ll need to apply for the Tier 4 student visa.

The new ‘Graduate’ route will be open to all international students – immigration status as a student and have successfully completed a course of study in any subject at undergraduate level or above at an approved UK Higher Education Provider. The visa will allow eligible students to work, or look for work, in any career or position of their choice, for two years after completing their studies.

MBBS and BDS degrees with 60% (Grade B / CGPA 3.0) or above will be considered on an individual basis

For entry into a postgraduate research course you'll need one of the following:

the usual entry requirement for an MPhil is a UK honours degree in a related subject, with Upper Second Class (2:1) or First Class honours or the equivalent from another country

for direct registration for a PhD you will usually require an appropriate Masters degree from a UK university or the equivalent from another country.
If English is not your first language you'll need to be able to show you have the required level of English language. This is so we can ensure you'll be able to follow your course.

Our standard requirement for all research degrees is IELTS 6.5 with 5.5 in each component. Please note that some of our courses may have higher English language proficiency requirements; for specific details and exceptions regarding IELTS, please visit your course page of choice.

Please note that any student requiring a SELT for a pre-sessional English course must ensure that they take their IELTS at an approved test centre. We also accept the following English language tests as equivalent to IELTS 6.5 with 5.5 in each element: ETS TOEFL iBT with 88 overall and a minimum of 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking Pearson PTE with 61 overall and a minimum of 51 in all components.
