Postgraduate Diploma in Arts - Cinema Studies

Postgraduate study in Cinema Studies at UC is offered within the English Department. Our Honours courses are coded as English courses, but the Cinema Studies Honours year focuses on film topics and has specific prerequisites.

Cinema Studies Honours students typically enrol in the interdisciplinary course ENGL 444 Women/Theory/Film: Continental Theory and French Cinema, convened by Senior Lecturer Mary Wiles, and ENGL 445 The Essay Film, convened by Senior Lecturer Alan Wright.

Cinema Studies postgraduate students who pursue the MA and PhD degrees in English have been recipients of the prestigious UC Master's Scholarship and have written on diverse film topics, including American independent cinema, the French New Wave, Japanese Animé, and Queer Cinema. Postgraduate students have the opportunity to tutor in stage one Cinema Studies courses, which allows them to acquire valuable work experience.

PSW Opportunity

  • During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
  • After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
  • After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Academic entry requirements

Students must have qualified for a Bachelor of Arts, or an equivalent degree, and satisfied the prerequisites for the subject concerned. Prerequisites vary between departments, but normally good grades in 300-level courses in that subject are required.
