Want to turn your passion for sport and exercise into a career packed full of physical activity? Well, with a degree in Sport and Exercise Science that’s exactly what you’ll get as you immerse yourself in sports development and research, performance and management.

When you’ve graduated with a BSES you could find yourself in a gym, a sports science lab, or out on the field coaching or managing individuals and teams as they strive to be the best they can in the sport and fitness world.

You’ll acquire a wide range of skills for communicating, negotiating, researching and problem-solving with people from all walks of life, from the serious sports professional to the casual gym-goer.

When you graduate with a BSES you’ll have a professional qualification with a sound knowledge base. This will allow you to start working with a wide range of people in the sport, health and fitness industries.

You’ll learn alongside our teaching staff who’ve worked in a wide range of high-level roles, from condition trainers for Rugby World Cup teams, to coaches supporting elite athletes pursuing world titles.

Career planning and course advice is offered to prospective students and members of the public who are considering their future study and employment options. The Career Centre is located in the Information Centre ( J Block) which is situated at the front of the Taradale campus. To help you get started in understanding career opportunities an excellent resource is Career Services rapuara, this has extensive information relating to 700+ careers including entry requirements, personal profiles, market information plus tools to assist in identifying career opportunities that reflect your interests and skills.

PSW Opportunity

  • During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
  • After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
  • After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.

ENTRY CRITERIA

ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must meet degree standard entry requirements. Approved bridging/foundation programmes include: the Certificate in Health Science, the Diploma in Recreation and Sport, or the Diploma in Therapeutic and Sport Massage.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English Language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. English Language fluency can be verified by achievement of one of the following within the last two years:

  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 4 (Academic)
  • IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5
  • PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42
  • International equivalents to IELTS accepted by NZQA or successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction (conditions apply)

ENTRY WITH CREDIT:

You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study while at high school, study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning.

  • Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations.
  • You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application.

You must apply prior to enrolment.  RPL and Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are enrolled in that course.
