Graduate Certificate in Education Studies

This course is designed for professionals to study in-depth a range of areas related to education. Participants may choose from a range of units from different areas or specialize in the area of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (also known as Teaching English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)). Some units are related to the school curriculum. However, these units are not intended for the purposes of teacher preparation in any particular method. The course articulates with the Master of Education and so provides a pathway for candidates wishing to pursue further study.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

A candidate shall:

  • (a) hold a three-year or four-year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognized University or tertiary institution (AQF Level 7); or
  • (b) hold a bachelor degree and a one or two-year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognized University (AQF Level 7); or
  • (c) hold a bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) in a relevant discipline* and have at least one year full-time (or equivalent) work experience** (TESOL specialization only); and  
  • (d) comply with the University's English Language Requirements for Admission Rule.

*Relevant disciplines include, but are not limited to:

  • English
  • Languages
  • Linguistics

**Relevant work experience must be supported by documentary evidence and includes, but is not limited to:

Adult educator in ELICOS, TAFE or University

Practical, Clinical or Work Experience

Across various units in this award, there are school and workplace engagement which embeds the learning in a relevant educational and professional context.

Prior to undertaking a placement, students must provide evidence that they have met child protection and probity checks as required by relevant educational authorities. Further information is provided in unit material.

Additional Requirements

The TESOL specialization may require contact with children in an educational setting (professional experience). Students will not be permitted to attempt this unless they have first completed online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid NSW Working with Children Check clearance (for those students wishing to complete their placement in NSW).
