Mechanical engineering is concerned with the design, construction, and operation of machinery. It applies the principles of physics, materials science, and mathematics to designing, developing, researching, evaluating, manufacturing, installing, testing, operating, maintaining, and managing mechanical systems.
As a discipline, mechanical engineering is applied in a variety of areas including mining, minerals processing, manufacturing, the oil and gas industry, the automotive, aviation and shipbuilding industries, electrical power generation and distribution, road and rail transport, defense, agriculture, fishing, and food processing.

PSW Opportunity
International students studying at Flinders University will be eligible to access an additional year in Australia on a post-study work visa, which means Masters graduate can get up to 3 years of PSW visa.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must normally hold one of the following appropriate qualifications:
- an engineering degree
- a science degree
- an Australian TAFE diploma or advanced diploma (AQF Level 5) qualification in an appropriate field plus seven years relevant work experience
- an equivalent overseas qualification.
In addition, applicants must demonstrate the successful completion of higher education topics in mathematics (equivalent to first-year university mathematics) and science (equivalent to university undergraduate topics in physics). Some basic knowledge of biology and human physiology is also assumed. However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.
