Biology BSc (Hons)

Biology at the University of Northampton is split into three stages. In the first stage you’ll develop a broad range of Biology skills, including biodiversity, conservation management, genetics, molecular biology, human physiology and the role of the immune system.

In the second and third stages you’ll have the opportunity to specialise; choosing from a range of biological concepts, including medical genetics, biodiversity, immunology and restoration ecology.

Our modules are informed by staff actively researching in their specialist areas, introducing you to science principles to help you develop analytical skills and encourage you to evaluate and recommend solutions to real-life, local to global, biological problems.

Biology’s role in society is explored through this course. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are used to examine large biological data sets at all three stages in the course. We believe that the skills in managing big data, analysing spatial relationships and thinking about biological problems at different scales are skills that biologists will need in the future either in biological conservation or human health.

Campus Information

Waterside Campus

In the summer of 2018 the University of Northampton moved to the brand-new Waterside Campus. This seven-year project saw a neglected brownfield site transformed into a successful and impressive new campus that facilitated a radical re-engineering of the University in terms of both teaching methodology and governance structures. aterside is a waterfront site of 24 hectares on the edge of the town centre. Its successful completion has turned a derelict site into a leading facility in the higher education sector. The project brief emphasised integration, of the University into the town and local community, and of departments, facilities and teams within the University itself. New pedestrian and road bridges and cycle routes link the site to the town, and public facilities and commercial outlets are part of a Waterside experience which continues beyond the University to local historic buildings and parks.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Standard entry requirements apply. A typical offer could be BCC at A-Level or DMM at BTEC. We welcome international applicants and applications from students with a range of non-traditional educational or professional qualifications. Those who do not have English as their first language will need to demonstrate that they meet the minimum English language requirement of IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent).

Integrated Foundation Year Entry Requirements

Admission to this foundation program is normally DEE at A-Level or MPP at BTEC. However, we would also like to hear from you if you have professional or industry experience instead, a range of other qualifications or self-developed subject knowledge that relates to the program you wish to study.
