Sociology and Criminology (Joint Honours) BA (Hons)

Through this combination, you will develop a critical understanding and insight into contemporary sociological themes and issues. You can choose from a range of specialist areas within Sociology and gain thorough training in research methods. This is then combined with the study of crime, social order and social control that is central to the study of Criminology.

We will support you to achieve your career and study ambitions, which is why if you complete our Employability Plus Gold programme or Changemaker Gold certificate alongside your studies and if you haven’t secured full-time employment 12 months after graduating* we will secure a three – six month paid internship for you, or support you into postgraduate study.

Within Sociology, you will gain an in-depth understanding in many areas including critically examining sociological perspectives through an exploration of diverse social structures, institutions and processes. In addition, they will also appreciate and demonstrate Sociology’s intellectual relationship with other disciplines and students will be encouraged to develop a sociological imagination which is progressively more critical and analytic.

Waterside Campus

In the summer of 2018 the University of Northampton moved to the brand-new Waterside Campus. This seven-year project saw a neglected brownfield site transformed into a successful and impressive new campus that facilitated a radical re-engineering of the University in terms of both teaching methodology and governance structures. aterside is a waterfront site of 24 hectares on the edge of the town centre. Its successful completion has turned a derelict site into a leading facility in the higher education sector. The project brief emphasised integration, of the University into the town and local community, and of departments, facilities and teams within the University itself. New pedestrian and road bridges and cycle routes link the site to the town, and public facilities and commercial outlets are part of a Waterside experience which continues beyond the University to local historic buildings and parks.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Standard entry requirements apply. A typical offer would be BCC at A-Level or DMM at BTEC. However, we welcome international applications and applications from those with a range of non-traditional educational or professional qualifications. We welcome applications from anyone with a lively interest in Sociology or issues of crime and justice who is prepared to pursue and develop that interest through reading and study.
