History (Joint Honours) BA/BSc (Hons)

Our History degree mixes academic study with field trips and opportunities to go on placements with local museums, heritage organisations and other relevant employers. You will be studying in an environment that is supportive, responsive, and above all friendly.

We will support you to achieve your career and study ambitions, which is why if you complete our Employability Plus Gold programme or Changemaker Gold certificate alongside your studies and if you haven’t secured full-time employment 12 months after graduating* we will secure a three – six month paid internship for you, or support you into postgraduate study.

This course offers innovative, research-driven topics on British, European and World history, covering all periods from the 13th Century through to the 21st Century. All of our tutors are practising historians who are enthusiastic about their work and publish regularly as experts in their fields. The team of tutors is big enough to offer a variety of courses, but small enough to give you a close-knit learning environment. You will know your tutors personally and see them regularly and there will always be someone on hand to help or offer academic support. In addition to your personal tutorials, there are also informal support structures in place from your module and course tutors.

Studying History as a joint honours degree, combined with another subject, gives you the opportunity to pull together your varied interests and apply what you learn across both subject areas.

Waterside Campus

In the summer of 2018 the University of Northampton moved to the brand-new Waterside Campus. This seven-year project saw a neglected brownfield site transformed into a successful and impressive new campus that facilitated a radical re-engineering of the University in terms of both teaching methodology and governance structures. aterside is a waterfront site of 24 hectares on the edge of the town centre. Its successful completion has turned a derelict site into a leading facility in the higher education sector. The project brief emphasised integration, of the University into the town and local community, and of departments, facilities and teams within the University itself. New pedestrian and road bridges and cycle routes link the site to the town, and public facilities and commercial outlets are part of a Waterside experience which continues beyond the University to local historic buildings and parks.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Standard entry requirements apply. A typical offer would be around BCC at A-Level or DMM at BTEC.

Candidates are normally expected to have achieved a grade C or higher in History at A-Level or to have studied History modules as part of their Access course with 12 credits at Level 3. However, candidates with other qualifications and from other backgrounds will be given consideration on a case-by-case basis.
