History and English (Joint Honours) BA (Hons)
Studying History and English will provide you with a learning experience that will be challenging and highly rewarding. This course will develop your ability to understand and analyse literary texts and to have a true understanding of the historical context in which they are set. You will be actively engaged with the course through field trips to historical sites and will be introduced to a fascinating range of literary texts and periods, allowing you to develop your skills as a thinker, reader, writer and critic.
We will support you to achieve your career and study ambitions, which is why if you complete our Employability Plus Gold programme or Changemaker Gold certificate alongside your studies and if you haven’t secured full-time employment 12 months after graduating* we will secure a three – six month paid internship for you, or support you into postgraduate study.
Whether you’re passionate about Shakespeare, Dickens or Toni Morrison, this course is designed to enthuse and inspire you whilst broadening your knowledge and understanding of English Literature and History.
In the History modules, you will study a wide range of topics and can tailor it to your own individual interests and ensure that they complement the content of the English modules you may chose. A research practice module will sharpen your skills in the second stage while the final stage allows you to take specialist modules, in which you work with tutors on your own specialist research areas.
Campus Information
Waterside Campus
In the summer of 2018 the University of Northampton moved to the brand-new Waterside Campus. This seven-year project saw a neglected brownfield site transformed into a successful and impressive new campus that facilitated a radical re-engineering of the University in terms of both teaching methodology and governance structures. aterside is a waterfront site of 24 hectares on the edge of the town centre. Its successful completion has turned a derelict site into a leading facility in the higher education sector. The project brief emphasised integration, of the University into the town and local community, and of departments, facilities and teams within the University itself. New pedestrian and road bridges and cycle routes link the site to the town, and public facilities and commercial outlets are part of a Waterside experience which continues beyond the University to local historic buildings and parks.
