Special Educational Needs and Inclusion (Autism Pathway) MA

This course will help you to develop your knowledge and skills in the field of Special Educational Needs and Inclusion, specialising in the autism spectrum, including Asperger syndrome. This specialist pathway is ideal for professionals working in early years, primary or secondary schools, further and higher education, voluntary sector, advisory roles, and residential settings. You can also study this course if you have a personal interest, subject to entry requirements.

This course will give you in-depth knowledge and understanding of various aspects related to autism. Our modules will help you to understand autism from the perspective of the individual and the family, focusing on theories that explore the strengths and needs of individuals. In order to help you evaluate best practice, including your own, we will take you through a thorough analysis of evidence-based approaches. Overall, we aim to help you to reduce the barriers that individuals with autism face in education and wider society.

Waterside Campus

In the summer of 2018 the University of Northampton moved to the brand-new Waterside Campus. This seven-year project saw a neglected brownfield site transformed into a successful and impressive new campus that facilitated a radical re-engineering of the University in terms of both teaching methodology and governance structures. aterside is a waterfront site of 24 hectares on the edge of the town centre. Its successful completion has turned a derelict site into a leading facility in the higher education sector. The project brief emphasised integration, of the University into the town and local community, and of departments, facilities and teams within the University itself. New pedestrian and road bridges and cycle routes link the site to the town, and public facilities and commercial outlets are part of a Waterside experience which continues beyond the University to local historic buildings and parks.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Applicants will possess one of the following:

  • Good honors degree of a UK University

Or

  • Good honors degree from a recognized University other than in the UK

Or

  • QTS or equivalent. Applicants working in children’s services without QTS with an ordinary degree or Early Years Teacher Status or QTLS will be considered.

Or

  • Applicants who have recent professional experience of three years or more will be positively considered.  In this case, the applicants will be interviewed and must demonstrate suitability for the course by providing: portfolio evidence of significant professional engagement in education or services for children at a graduate equivalent level and/or a piece of written text. This portfolio sets out details of the relevant career pathway of the candidate, including a summary of their specific responsibilities relating to children & young people in schools or other settings.

Or

  • Applicants who have achieved level 7 credits undertaken on the UK accredited initial teacher education program will be eligible to join the MA SEN & Inclusion with a maximum of 60 credits if applicants are able to demonstrate that their level 7 credits focussed upon an SEN specialism and was achieved recently.

Or

  • Applicants who have achieved level 7 credits on the Postgraduate Certificate Special Educational Needs (SEN) Coordination will be eligible to join the MA SEN & Inclusion with a maximum of 60 credits.

BANGLADESH

We accept the following qualifications:

  • 4-Year Bachelor’s degree in Bangladesh from an institution listed on UKNARIC,
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Bangladesh from institutions listed on UKNARIC,
  • Successful completion of a recognised pre-master's programme.

INDIA

We accept the following qualifications:

  • 3-Year or 4-Year Bachelor’s degree – dependent on the awarding institution and final grade,
  • Successful completion of a recognised pre-master's programme.

NEPAL

We accept the following qualifications:

  • 3-Year or 4-Year Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in Nepal,
  • Successful completion of a recognised pre-master's programme.

PAKISTAN

We accept the following qualifications:

  • 4 or 5-Year Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University,
  • Master’s degree in Pakistan from a recognised university,
  • Successful completion of a recognized pre-master's programme.

SRI LANKA

We accept the following qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a 3-yr or4-yr degree in Sri Lanka from an intuition recognised by UKNARIC,
  • A Second Class Honours degree from a UK institution or equivalent

Please include the following documents with your completed application form:

  • Details of your English Language competence, for example, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tests or equivalent.
  • Certified copies of your school certificates and any other relevant qualifications. A certified copy is a photocopy that has an original official stamp of your school, college, or university on it. The stamp should not be a photocopy.
  • At least one reference (signed and on headed paper).
  • A personal statement to explain why you are interested in studying your chosen course.
