Transnational Rights and Security LLM

The LLM Transnational Rights and Security will develop knowledge and understanding of contemporary international legal issues whilst empowering you to actively apply your own lived experiences and to critically develop by reflecting on the experiences of others. It will be delivered via student-centred, active learning to equip you with the skills need to make a positive contribution to change in society.

The importance of balancing rights and security is very much a global 21st century issue. The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime considers transnational organised crime to be changing and flexible, and capable of taking advantage of the increased levels of globalization. This makes it more than a national priority, and so understanding how international, regional and national organisations are attempting to tackle the issue is a crucial step. It must be balanced with international human rights provisions, and the overlap into terrorism brings into play national security strategies which, in turn have to be balanced with religious sensitivity. All of this is conducted in an environment where illicit firearms have been responsible for over a million deaths between 2012 and 2016 (Small Arms Survey, 2017).

The LLM Transnational Rights and Security allows you to explore and develop skills in all of these areas.

Campus Information

Waterside Campus

In the summer of 2018 the University of Northampton moved to the brand-new Waterside Campus. This seven-year project saw a neglected brownfield site transformed into a successful and impressive new campus that facilitated a radical re-engineering of the University in terms of both teaching methodology and governance structures. aterside is a waterfront site of 24 hectares on the edge of the town centre. Its successful completion has turned a derelict site into a leading facility in the higher education sector. The project brief emphasised integration, of the University into the town and local community, and of departments, facilities and teams within the University itself. New pedestrian and road bridges and cycle routes link the site to the town, and public facilities and commercial outlets are part of a Waterside experience which continues beyond the University to local historic buildings and parks.
