Master of Science (Biochemistry)
The curriculum consists of a dissertation in a chosen field of study that has been approved by the Department.
Candidates also have to present at least one seminar on an approved topic, as well one article for publication in a recognised journal.
Additional courses or advanced lectures on current topics may be prescribed by the Department.
The Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology provides research opportunities in the following programmes:
Ostrich protein structure programme
Antibody receptor programme
Cell biology programme(traditional medicine: anticancer,antidiabetic,anti HIV).

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
The medium of instruction and examination at the NMMU is English.
Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to submit proof of English proficiency before registration. The TOEFL or IELTS tests, available in most countries, are acceptable proof.
IELTS – 6.5 overall score with a minimum of 6 in each section.
TOEFL: PBT – 580 overall with minimums of 53 in listening, 52 in reading and 59 in structure/written
CBT – 237 overall with minimums of 19 in listening, 19 in reading and 25 in structure/written
IBT – 90 overall with minimums of 18 in listening, 17 in reading 22 in writing and 19 in speaking
