BACHELOR OF NURSING HONOURS (ADVANCED MIDWIFERY AND NEONATAL NURSING SCIENCE)
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Subject to the specific admission requirements below, candidates shall be admitted
to the studies for the degree if they hold a four-year diploma in Nursing Science
and Midwifery that is obtained at a college of nursing in co-operation with a
university.
Prospective students shall be admitted to the studies for the degree only if a pass
mark of at least 60% is obtained in the major modules of the diploma. Candidates
may be required to supplement their knowledge of a particular topic to the
satisfaction of the Head of the Department.
Candidates must occupy an approved post and possess at least two years’
appropriate experience.
Applicants shall not be admitted as candidates for the degree except with the
approval of the Faculty Management of the Faculty of Health Sciences, on the
recommendation of the Head of the Department of Nursing Science.
Candidates must hold a professional qualification in the field of study in which
research is being done for the research essay.
Unless Senate decides otherwise, candidates must be registered with the South
African Nursing Council as general nurses and midwives.
The qualification shall extend over a period of at least one academic year of fulltime study or two academic years of part-time study

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
COUNTRY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Applicants completing Cambridge administered examinations will be accepted with the following grades:
A-level: Grades A, B, C and D
O-level: Grades A, B and C
Students completing non-Cambridge administered examinations will be accepted with the following grades:
A - level: Grades A, B and C
O-level: Grades A, B and C
In addition to the above applicants must meet the minimum SPS score and programme related requirements:
O - level: minimum B grade
A - level: minimum D grade or the equivalent grade from other school leaving systems as indicated in the conversion table
In programmes where compulsory school leaving subjects are indicated, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
International Baccalaureate Diploma: At least 27 points required.
International Baccalaureate Certificate: Pass marks in two Higher Level, and three Subsidiary Level subjects, including English. Pass marks = symbols 5 to 7.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT
The medium of instruction and examination at Nelson Mandela University is English.
Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to submit proof of English proficiency before registration. The TOEFL or IELTS tests, available in most countries, are acceptable proof.
The minimum TOEFL score required is:
200 on the computer-based test;
533 on the paper-based test;
The minimum score required IELTS score is:
6.0
The minimum score on the IBT:
72 overall with minimums of 16 in listening, 15 in reading 22 in writing and 19 in speaking
If the above proof of English language proficiency is not provided before registration, please note that registration may be refused or you will be
required to undertake an evaluation by the Nelson Mandela University English Language Skills Programme. Depending upon your performance, you may be required to register for and complete the English Language Skills Programme.
Students with O level or comparable school leaving results may apply for the Extended programmes only. However, places are limited and the relevant international admissions officer will guide students.

The foreign school qualification is benchmarked against the South African school leaving certificate as the standard. The University may add additional requirements for specific programmes. Applicants from SADC countries only offering GCSE or O level equivalents can be directly admitted to the extended programs if they meet the above criteria.
