Physics with Nuclear Astrophysics BSc (Hons)

Why choose this course
Our exciting BSc and MPhys Physics with Nuclear Astrophysics courses are unique in the UK. On these courses you’ll study the core modules required of a physics degree, but also gain a specialism that combines the quantum world of atomic nuclei with the cosmic scale of astronomy. After all, almost everything you see in the night sky is the result of a nuclear reaction.

Our courses open the door to a wealth of opportunities in academia, finance, data science and the technology industry.

Physics students at Surrey also benefit from our excellent facilities, the University’s partnership with the National Physical Laboratory and our wide-reaching international placement community.

A unique aspect of both courses is our placement programme:

  • As part of our BSc course, you can undertake a paid year-long placement in an industry research laboratory or company, gaining valuable real-world experience as part of your degree.
  • On our MPhys course you will undertake a year-long research placement that can be in one of our world-leading research groups, or at one of our partner institutions all over the world.

What you will study
On our Physics with Nuclear Astrophysics courses, you’ll explore core elements of both traditional physics (e.g. particle physics, atoms and molecules) and topics within astronomy and nuclear physics, reflecting the outstanding research we conduct at Surrey.

The additional option to take an integrated research year or Professional Training placement will give you invaluable hands-on experience to enhance your employability.

You can apply to study for either a BSc or an MPhys (Master of Physics), a direct route to a masters qualification. On an MPhys course, you’ll spend a year doing research before returning for a final year of masters-level modules. Depending on your progress, you may have the option to switch to a BSc or MPhys during your studies. Find out more about the benefits of an integrated masters degree.
