Contemporary Sociology MA

This degree will provide you with advanced training in sociology, focusing on contemporary theories, themes and debates. You will develop your social research skills enabling you to move into a variety of careers as well as providing opportunities for further academic research.

The course combines four core modules with two option modules which, along with your dissertation, allow you to specialise in your preferred area of sociological research. In the core modules you will explore some of the main problems of contemporary societies, such as environmental change, terrorism, or the role of the media, together with analysis of theoretical developments in sociology in recent decades. You will gain a deeper understanding of the practical applications of sociological research in the public context. The option modules provide the opportunity for more intense specialisation in areas of sociological research in which department staff are currently active.

As well as specific knowledge of contemporary sociology this degree will develop your skills of critical analysis and broaden your understanding of societies and social issues. The course will equip you with the ability to describe and discuss theories, concepts and research findings in sociology and to present ideas in a concise
and critical fashion.

By developing your practical transferable skills, the course provides an excellent basis for entering employment in a range of sectors within the UK and other parts of the world. The MA is also a foundation for those wishing to progress to a PhD.
