Biochemistry and Genetics with a Year in Industry BSc
Course description
Our BSc allows you to do a year-long, paid work placement between your second and third years. You'll pay reduced fees for the year you're on placement and you'll have the support you need from your tutor and the University. Most students earn salaries during their placements and many are offered a graduate-level job at the end.
Previous students have found placements at global pharmaceutical companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer and Unilever. But your placement doesn't have to be in the lab - this BSc gives you the freedom to test out an alternative career path. For example, you could pursue a role in market research, communications or business development within or outside of the pharmaceutical industry.
As well as gaining valuable work experience on this dual honours degree, you'll study biochemistry and genetics in an integrated way to a high level, and you'll get a broad grounding in the other molecular biosciences.
In the first year, you'll take a broad-based programme that covers biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and molecular biology. At the end of the first year, before you specialise in years two and three, you're free to transfer between any of the courses in the department. You're not tied to the degree you originally registered for. Courses in our department span biochemistry, genetics, microbiology and molecular biology.
In the second year, you'll study your chosen subjects in more depth and develop your practical skills. In the third year, there is a practical research project. This could involve laboratory research, business enterprise activities, science journalism or school teaching, depending on your career interests.
If you want to study biochemistry and genetics, but don't meet the entry requirements to go straight into the first year, our Biosciences with Foundation Year could be for you. After successfully completing the one-year programme, you'll progress onto the first year of your chosen degree.
