AS in Occupational Therapy Assistant
Throughout this program, you will learn a range of occupational therapy interventions, including helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills and providing support for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes.
In concert with the mission of University of the Charleston, the Occupational
Therapy Assistant Program seeks to prepare its graduates to enter the global workforce as
highly educated, productive individuals who have the knowledge and ability to embrace
enlightened living through therapeutic use of self, and the technical skills and
professional behaviors to be an involved member of the occupational therapy community.
The OTA program seeks to maintain the highest ethical standards and to ensure dynamic
curriculum development by thorough and ongoing assessment programs.
Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Goals
Our goal is to prepare entry-level Occupational Therapy Assistants:
• Who are competent, compassionate, and ethical.
• Who demonstrate a knowledge level and skill set indicative of securing national
certification in Occupational Therapy Assisting.
• Who understand and communicate effectively across disciplines.
• Who value lifelong learning, are dedicated professionals and socially responsible
citizens.
Faculty are committed to:
• Providing a strong foundation in the skills and knowledge needed for entry-level
OTA practice competencies.
• Providing an environment to assist in understanding occupational therapy and
practice.
• Providing instruction in basic skills and a supportive learning environment that
will encourage and motivate the student to complete the prescribed course of
study and remain lifelong learners.
• Providing an atmosphere that teaches respect for human life and demonstrates
how that respect can be translated into client/patient care.
• Provide an atmosphere that provides students with an environment to learn new
and marketable skills.
• Focusing on continuous improvement in the Occupational Therapy Assistant
curriculum, allowing students access to the best evidence in the field of

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
First year students must submit the following: University of Charleston application Transcripts (Official transcripts as well as an official English translation from all prior and currently attended secondary institutions are required for an admittance decision. Official transcripts may be scanned and submitted via email.) Exam Scores International students who do not take the ACT or SAT exams must submit one standardized English test score. Acceptable forms of an English test score are as follows: The College Board’s Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (A minimum score of 550 is required for the paper-based test (pBT) and a 61 for the Internet-based test (iBT)) The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (A minimum of 6.0 is required) The duolingo exam (A minimum of 2.6 required) The PTE Academic exam (A minimum of 54 is required) GTEC English Proficiency Test (A minimum of 1100 is required) Other standardized English exams are accepted only upon pre-approval from the Director of International Programs. Note that consideration is taken into account in determining English competence if a student has studied at an American institution. The University of Charleston reserves the right to administer an English proficiency test to any student whose primary language is not English. This test is taken during International Student Orientation before the start of classes. If a student is found lacking in English proficiency, he or she will be required to take the coursework in English as a Second Language (ESL) currently offered at the University of Charleston. If the needed ESL coursework is not offered, the University of Charleston reserves the right to refer the student to an Intensive English Language Program. Students from the following list of countries do not need to submit an ESL test score but should still submit an SAT or ACT score;
