Course Overview
Do you want to achieve a high standard in Irish Language Studies? Are you interested in developing more research, analytical and presentation skills? Are you thinking of doing research at doctoral level in the future? If so, the MA in Modern Irish may be the course for you.

The National University of Ireland, Galway is the national leader in the field of Irish Language Studies. The Department of Irish staff has expertise in all periods of Irish, from the early to the modern language. The university has excellent research facilities and has recently invested heavily in the university archives, giving the student a unique advantage of researching our Irish language collections. The Gaeltacht is on our doorstep and students have access to excellent learning and research facilities in the Gaeltacht campuses of the university in Connemara and in Gaoth Dobhair.

If you do the full-time course (one year), lectures and seminars will take place two days a week. The course can also be taken part-time (over two years) and you will have lectures one day a week in that case.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • To operate accurately at professional and academic level through the medium of Irish in writing and speaking;
  • Critical analysis of various areas of contemporary Irish Language Studies: Literary Literacy, Cultural and Social Critics and Sociolinguistics;
  • Demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach in the critical analysis of various areas of Irish Language Studies;
  • Present your research and analysis competently and effectively at the appropriate academic level;
  • Innovative, independent research of a specific subject of your choice and the production of this research in the form of a thesis.

The same learning outcomes apply as the Postgraduate Diploma rather than independent thesis research.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Entry Requirements
Candidates must have a second honors degree 2.2 (at level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications), and 2.1 in Irish. Applications will be accepted from candidates who hold a 2.1 degree or equivalent in another subject, but must satisfy the Academic Director of the course that they have sufficient Irish language ability to undertake the course, by examination and / or interview. Candidates who do not have the appropriate academic qualifications, but who have five years' relevant professional experience, may apply under the University system for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
