Medical Ultrasound, PGDip

The medical ultrasound programme is designed to be flexible to suit variety of healthcare professionals and students aiming to start a career in ultrasound. The traditional route allows students to get an ultrasound qualification (PG-Cert, PG Dip, or MSc Medical ultrasound) by selecting abdominal and ObGy modules.

The multiple optional modules provide professional development opportunity to those already working in the healthcare. The students can choose a module according to their professional needs to study in their own time and at their own pace. For example, those working in physiotherapy, rheumatology, orthopaedics, pain therapists and rehabilitation medicine might wish to focus on musculoskeletal modules while GPs, acute physicians and emergency medicine trainees might select PoCUS modules. (NOTE: SOME OF THE MODULES MIGHT NOT BE OFFERED IN EACH SEMESTER).

The course is taught by highly experienced clinicians in the UCLan School of Medicine’s state-of-the-art facilities, using the latest equipment and phantoms, as well as online. There is great emphasis on students acquiring sound understanding of the physics underpinning ultrasound and on gaining excellent clinical skills.

Please note that:

Any of the optional module might not run if the minimum number of expected students is not met.
Sonographer or Ultrasound Practitioner are not protected titles in the UK and students after completing medical ultrasound programme on its own are NOT eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Some employers require HCPC registration and as such, employment may not be possible in certain NHS trusts and some private sector organisations. Although many organisations already employ sonographers from non-traditional backgrounds, there no guarantees to it and university cannot advise on employment issues. Details on employment for sonographers can be found at the SCoR website.
Students of the Medical Ultrasound programme at UCLan may wish to take student membership of the Society & College of Radiographers (SCoR) whilst in training. We also advise applying for registration with the SCoR's Voluntary Register of Sonographers on completion of the programme.
