MSc Mental Health Nursing (Pre-registration)
We’ve designed our course around the core values of the NHS constitution so that you understand what’s required in caring for and supporting vulnerable people. Our aim is to make sure we prepare you for the challenges you may face and develop the expertise you’ll need to become a leader in nursing.
Mental health and wellbeing is a growing health concern for our society. During this accelerated two-year course, you'll gain the experience and skills required to practice as an mental health nurse in two years, rather than three. You’ll develop the expertise to manage both the physical and psychological needs of patients.
You’ll spend half of your time on clinical placements in a variety of settings with support from a practice supervisor/assessor throughout. In addition to time spent in practice on placement, you’ll have a mix of simulated and technology-enhanced learning, university attendance in shared groups, field-specific groups, or interdisciplinary learning. When you're on campus you'll be based in our award-winning Brooks building, equipped with state-of-the-art, specialist health facilities and simulation technology.
Some of the topics you’ll explore include the ethics of medicine management, recovery approaches, and intervention therapies for substance abuse. You’ll also learn practical skills in conflict resolution, how to manage challenging behaviour, and how to safeguard vulnerable patients.
At Manchester Met, all of our teaching team in the Department of Nursing have been practising nurses, health visitors or advanced practitioners at some point in their careers. Some of their specialist areas include nutrition, stroke rehabilitation, acute and emergency care, palliative and cancer care, dementia, and mental health.
Most of our academic staff still practice and work shifts in their specialist areas, alongside their roles at Manchester Met. This helps to make sure that the skills they teach you in the classroom are real, relevant and up-to-date with current NHS standards.
