Bachelor of Education (Technology) (BEd(Tech))

Program Available at Hamilton Campus

Teachers are influential community members, making a difference to young people and their learning, knowledge and skill acquisition. They play a major role in helping their students develop their independence and success in their lives.

This degree is designed for two types of students; those who know what they want to be secondary school technology teachers, or those from the trades and industry, who need to become degree qualified to teach technology education.

The ITE papers within this degree are the same as for the Bachelor of Teaching (secondary). The extra points within the degree come from the study of papers in other faculties that build content for technology teaching.
There are two pathways:

Option one: Subject papers are completed through our Faculty of Science and Engineering - This pathway is for those that are focusing on the proposed new technological areas of:

  • Computational thinking for digital technologies
  • Designing and developing digital outcomes
  • Designing and developing materials outcomes
  • Designing and developing processed outcomes
  • Design and visual communications (DVC)

Option two: Subject papers are completed through  our Waikato Management School - This pathway is for those that are focusing on:

  • Designing and developing processed outcomes

As part of this degree, you will become prepared to teach young adults from 7 to 13 years old. You'll gain a solid foundation in all aspects of the New Zealand curriculum. You'll also learn about professional and ethical practices, adolescent development, issues that face teachers and learners with special needs, teaching children from diverse backgrounds, classroom management, and the wider contexts of school, community, and national systems. On practicum, you'll take an active role in the classroom under the guidance of an associate teacher. This includes one day per week in the second and third year of your degree with additional full-time blocks and a full 10-week block in your fourth year. During your degree, you'll experience different types of schools and work with a range of age groups.
