PGCE(Postgraduate Certificate in Education) Secondary Social Science with QTS

Our one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) prepares you to teach the secondary school and Post-16 curriculum for one or more of the social sciences; sociology, psychology, criminology, health and health and social care, politics and law.

You’ll explore ways to teach areas of the social sciences and develop your subject knowledge (this includes citizenship and personal, social, health and economic education) across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 (ages 11 – 19 years). You will also gain experience in teaching some of the humanities (religious education, history and geography) at Key Stage 3 and 4 (ages 11 – 16 years). You’ll typically explore ways to teach sociology and health and social care, and how to teach some aspects of psychology.

During the year, you’ll attend a series of lectures, with topics such as behaviour management techniques, assessment for learning, assessing sociology, psychology and health and social care exam papers and what school and college leaders look for in an ideal candidate. We also have guest speakers including exam board advisors and teachers from local schools and colleges.

When you’re at Manchester Met, you’ll consider how to plan lessons, reflect on your planning, learn how research can develop your teaching practice and look at ways to develop your teacher persona.

You won’t simply learn theory with us on-campus though, you’ll teach classes in schools too. You’ll spend a minimum of 120 days on placements in schools, gradually becoming an expert practitioner.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

IELTS (Academic) Or IELTS for UKVI (Academic) - 6.5, with no component below 5.5 for MA or MSc. 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in any section for MRes, MPhil or PhD (except Business Research - see below)

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) Or PTE Academic UKVI - 65, with no less than 59 in any section

TOEFL IBT - Overall score: 89 With no individual test score below: Listening: 17 Reading: 18 Speaking: 20 Writing : 17

You will normally have at least a 2:2 UK honours degree (or international equivalent) in an accounting and finance degree, or a degree with substantial accounting content.

We will also consider applicants with appropriate professional passes in a CCAB or equivalent approved professional accounting body and with substantial relevant work experience.

Overseas candidates should have Cambridge Proficiency in English, IELTS Band 7 with no less than 6.0 in any element, or Pitmans Advanced.
