PGCE(Postgraduate Certificate in Education) Secondary Geography with QTS
Our one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) prepares you to teach the secondary school geography curriculum.
You’ll explore ways to teach geography, including Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and how to use technologies.
Some of the topics you’ll study include enquiry learning, thinking skills, fieldwork, and geographical knowledge. You’ll question issues from how the school environment affects a student’s understanding of geography to who decides the geographical knowledge students learn.
In September, you’ll usually go on an overnight field trip to help you learn how to plan a trip. You’ll consider logistics, risk assessments, daytime and evening activities, and geographical skills.
You’ll have a series of guest lectures to help you learn how to teach geography and develop your subject knowledge. Past guests include people from exam boards, the Royal Meteorological Society, a local branch of the Geographical Association and Ordnance Survey (speaking on Geographical Information Systems).
You won’t only learn ways to teach your class cartographic skills or the differences between abrasion and plucking though – you’ll teach in schools too.
You’ll spend a minimum of 120 days on placements in schools, gradually increasing your involvement to become an expert practitioner.
