Industrial design is a great choice if you enjoy designing, inventing and making three-dimensional things. From smartphones and sports shoes to movie sets and healthcare products, industrial design transforms people’s lives - and Massey grads are at the forefront.

Industrial design is about designing better and smarter products used in daily life. It includes practical design and study of the manufacture and use of products, equipment, and furniture.

The Bachelor of Design with Honours (Industrial Design) encourages innovative thinking and creative application of new technologies. You’ll learn how to meet social, cultural, economic, and environmental needs of people of today and the future.

You'll learn to arrive at design solutions and show them by using many materials and techniques to create models and prototypes with a professional level of finish.

Your learning is studio-project based. You'll research and design a diverse range of items from tools to kitchenware, jewellery to sporting goods, furniture to agricultural equipment. You'll learn how effective use of good design in production and marketing is an essential element in the achievement of business success.

The Wellington campus is in New Zealand's capital city and is a great place to live. It is a compact city, set between a magnificent harbour and rolling green hills, where shops, exciting galleries and great restaurants are within easy walking distance. The Wellington Campus is centrally located near the city's artistic and entertainment quarters of Cuba Street and Courtenay Place in the heart of Wellington.

Job Opportunity Potential

Graduates are well prepared for professional careers in fields like product design consultancies, design departments in manufacturing industries, architectural practices, social services departments, and industrial policy development in private and public corporations.

You will typically start your careers as a design assistant or junior designer. You could then progress to senior or management positions in private practices or in manufacturing and construction industries. Some of our graduates have become directors of successful export-orientated manufacturing businesses, or design consultants in both New Zealand and overseas.

Graduates may also continue to postgraduate studies and further develop their design abilities, knowledge and research interests, and skills.

Many of our students have won prestigious national and international design competitions, such as the Dyson, Electrolux, Sony, LG and Red Dot awards. Graduates are working in consumer product companies such as Fisher and Paykel, Apple, Nike and Philips and creative industries such as Weta Workshop

PSW Opportunity

  • During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
  • After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
  • After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • All India Senior School Certificate (AISSC) or Indian School Certificate (ISC) Year 12 with an overall average of 75% and a minimum of 60% in English
  • For most undergraduate level programmes, the minimum academic entry requirement is successful completion of a qualification equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 University Entrance. International students need to check the equivalency of their secondary school qualification by reviewing the list of Academic Admission Requirements by Country/Region.
  • International students who have previously studied at a New Zealand secondary school should refer to the secondary school requirements section.
  • International students who have completed 3 x B at level 5 or 6 passes in the New Zealand Diploma of Business may apply for entry into a Bachelor's programme.
    • An NZQA transcript as formal evidence of the NZDipBus results is required before credit will be assessed and only papers with a minimum grade of B will be assessed for credit.
    • The English language requirements can be met by:
      1. A minimum IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) used to gain entry to the NZDipBus or,
      2. A recent IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 5.5
